Simply put, $p \\prec q$ means that $q$ is the smallest element of $P$ which is strictly greater than $p$\. $p \\prec q$ is pronounced "$p$ is covered by $q$", or "$p$ covers $q$"\. $q$ is said to be a cover of $p$\.
